You launch desktop programs from the desktop. Why not launch Google programs from the desktop, too?

If you want to open up Google Spreadsheets to create a new file, you can point your browser to http://www.google.com and choose "Documents" from the "more" menu on top, then click NewSpreadsheet. A quicker way to do this is to use a bookmark, but Motti Strom, Mobile Software Engineer at Google UK, suggests an even better way: create a desktop icon to launch Google documents, spreadsheets, or presentations.

Hack 2. Collaborate with Others Through Google Docs

With Google Docs, you can collaborate with others on the same document at the same time, and make documents accessible to the world within seconds by publishing them on the Web.

Online applications are born to be collaborative—the program and the data it works on are already potentially accessible from all over the world. Plus, every user will see the same version of that program without having to worry about whether they've installed all the latest patches, because the software runs on Google's servers, which automatically pick up the latest bug fixes and new features.

This collaborative approach requires you to do a bit of rethinking if you're used to desktop office tools. Instead of sending someone an attachment, invite them to a Google document. Instead of discussing a spreadsheet via the phone, email, or instant messenger, use the chat function that's built into Google Spreadsheets (see "Sharing a Spreadsheet," later in this hack). Instead of setting up third-party screen sharing software, you can invite others to your presentation URL and flip the slides for them.

Ironically, by being centralized, the data acts more as if it's decentralized; as the files are stored on Google's servers, which are already accessible to others who provide the needed credentials (their Google Account), Google ensures that you don't need to create a copy of a file to have someone else see it. So instead of dozens of Microsoft Word files scattered around your team's PCs (or in different folders on your intranet), the Google document exists only in that virtual "computing cloud." And Google Docs tracks who edits it, can alert you of changes, and allows you to compare document revisions.

Get Feedback on a Document You're Working On

One common use of collaboration is to ask for feedback on a document you're editing. Your friend, colleague, editor, or boss can add comments to your document, which you can work with in turn. All your collaborator needs for this is a Google Account, as discussed in the beginning of this chapter. (Without a Google Account, others can only view your documents—they cannot modify them.)

Let's start by creating a Google Docs document at http://docs.google.com. Name it "Thai Chicken Recipe." To get the initial recipe, you can go to Google Base at http://base.google.com and click the Recipes link; next, select the cuisine, main ingredient, and more from the drop-down menus, as pictured in Figure 1-6, and choose your preferred dish. You can highlight, copy, then paste the full page content directly into your empty Docs document as shown in Figure 1-7.

If you like to eat but you're no master cook, you can now invite your master cook friend to the document to proofread it. (None of your friends can cook Thai? Visit Google's social network at http://orkut.com and join the 6,500+ member-strong "Thai food lovers" community.) To invite your friend, click Share"Share with others" on top of the editor. Enter your friend's email address—preferably their Gmail address—into the invitation box. (And uncheck the "Invitations may be used by anyone" box, just in case someone else manages to get their hands on the invitation.) When you click the "Invite collaborators" button, your friend gets an email message, shown in Figure 1-8, and can start to edit along.

Google Apps Hacks

Google Docs (http://docs.google.com) is the title of Google's text, spreadsheet, and presentation editor, similar in style to Microsoft's Word, Excel, and PowerPoint programs, but with fewer features, and a stronger focus on collaboration. With Google Docs, you can write letters, recipes, tutorials, a diary, book chapters—I'm using it to write this book—or anything else.

You can also create web pages, thanks to the export options that Google Docs provides. Google Spreadsheets, on the other hand, allows you to perform spreadsheet calculations; you can keep any numeric or textual data organized—from the prices of items in your antique collection to the age and address of your employees, and so on. Google Spreadsheets provides you with a variety of formulas to perform calculations within a spreadsheet. You can also create neat visualizations using the chart tool. Google Presentations, the last of the trio, is useful for creating presentation slides for online or offline use.

To sign up for this service, as is the case with most other Google services described throughout the book, you need a Google Account.

 

Hack 1. How to Get Your Google Account

You can create a Google Account through many of Google's services. The easiest way is to go to http://www.gmail.com and click the "Sign up for Gmail" link. (Note that if you already have Gmail, you also already have a Google Account.) During the sign-up process, you provide your first and last name and your preferred username, along with other information, as shown in Figure 1-1. Once you agree to the Terms of Service and complete the sign-up by clicking the "I accept" button, you'll see a Congratulations page. At one point in time, the first letter in cisco Systems was a lowercase ``c''. At present, various factions within the company have adopted a capital ``C'', while fierce traditionalists (as well as some others) continue to use the lowercase variant, as does the cisco Systems logo. This FAQ has chosen to use the lowercase variant throughout.

cisco is not C.I.S.C.O. but is short for San Francisco, so the story goes.  Back in the early days when the founders Len Bosack and Sandy Lerner and appropriate legal entities were trying to come up with a name they did many searches for non similar names, and always came up

with a name which was denied. Eventually someone suggested ``cisco'' and the name wasn't taken (although SYSCO may be confusingly similar sounding). You should tell your cisco to use ``encapsulation frame-relay ietf'' (instead of ``encapsulation frame-relay'') on your serial interface that's running frame relay if your frame relay network contains a diverse set of manufacturers' routers. The keyword ``ietf'' specifies that your cisco will use RFC1294-compliant encapsulation, rather than the default, RFC1490-compliant encapsulation (other products, notably Novell MPR 2.11, use a practice sanctioned by 1294 but deemed verbotten by 1490, namely padding of the nlpid).  If only a few routers in your frame relay cloud require this, then you can use the default encapsulation on everything and specify the exceptions with the frame-relay map command:

The ``terminal monitor'' command directs your cisco to send debugging output to the current session. It's necessary to turn this on each time you telnet to your router to view debugging information. After that, you must specify the specific types of debugging you wish to turn on; please note that these stay on or off until changed, or until the router reboots, so remember to turn them off when you're done.

Debugging messages are also logged to a host if you have trap logging enabled on your cisco. You can check this like so:

If you have syslog going to a host somewhere and you then set about a nice long debug session from a term your box is doing double work and sending every debug message to your syslog server. Additionally, if you turn on something that provides copious debugging output, be careful that you don't overflow your disk (``debug ip-rip'' is notorious for this).

One solution to this is to only log severity ``info'' and higher:

The other solution is to just be careful and remember to turn off debugging. This is easy enough with:

Then always debug from a vty.  If the box is busy and you are a little too vigorous with debugging and the box is starting to sink, quickly run, don't walk to your console and kill the session on the vty.  If you are on the console your debugging has top prioority and then the only way out is the power switch.  This of course makes remote debugging a real sweaty palms adventure especially on a crowded box.

What is the Registry?
The Registry is a database used to store settings and options for the 32 bit versions of Microsoft Windows including Windows 95, 98, ME and NT/2000. It contains information and settings for all the hardware, software, users, and preferences of the PC. Whenever a user makes changes to a Control Panel settings, or File Associations, System Policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in the Registry.
The physical files that make up the registry are stored differently depending on your version of Windows; under Windows 95 & 98 it is contained in two hidden files in your Windows directory, called USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT, for Windows Me there is an additional CLASSES.DAT file, while under Windows NT/2000 the files are contained seperately in the %SystemRoot%\System32\Config directory. You can not edit these files directly, you must use a tool commonly known as a "Registry Editor" to make any changes (using registry editors will be discussed later in the article).
The Structure of the Registry
The Registry has a hierarchal structure, although it looks complicated the structure is similar to the directory structure on your hard disk, with Regedit being similar to Windows Explorer.

Back in 1978, a couple of bright fellows at AT&T's Bell Labs, where the Unix
operating system was developed, wondered if computer files could just be
copied from one computer to another over a cable.  State of the art data
transfer back then meant writing data to paper cards or magnetic tape and
reading them in on another computer.

The chaps with the bright idea were M.E. Lesk and A.S. Cohen and the program
they wrote to implement the idea was Unix to Unix Copy, or UUCP.  The idea
caught on just about the same time Unix was taking off in popularity.

As the number of computers that could UUCP to each other grew, the first
wide-area network was born.  It slowly grew to the size it has today of over
11,000 nodes, or individual computers.  The UUCP network, named
after the primary software used for communication across the network in its
early days, now provides much more than simple file copying. The UUCP network
now provides electronic mail, network-based news services
and, of course, file transfer services between each computer on the network.

Installing Iis On Windows Xp Pro

If you are running Windows XP Professional on your computer you can install Microsoft's web server, Internet Information Server 5.1 (IIS) for free from the Windows XP Pro installation CD and configure it to run on your system by following the instructions below: -
1. Place the Windows XP Professional CD-Rom into your CD-Rom Drive.

2. Open 'Add/Remove Windows Components' found in 'Add/Remove Programs' in the 'Control Panel'.

3. Place a tick in the check box for 'Internet Information Services (IIS)' leaving all the default installation settings intact.

4. Once IIS is installed on your machine you can view your home page in a web browser by typing 'http://localhost' (you can substitute 'localhost' for the name of your computer) into the address bar of your web browser. If you have not placed your web site into the default directory you should now be looking at the IIS documentation.

Remote Desktop Through Company Firewall

Note this tutorial is collection of tips I gathered from searching the internet and some credit is due to the original authors. None of which I know.
A lot of people I know love using the Windows Remote Desktop feature at work, however are prevented from connecting to their home computer because of the company firewall. This is because most corporate firewalls block port 3389 which Remote Desktop uses. Most just switch to VNC, however most find it slower than Remote Desktop.

This quick tutorial shows how (from a fire walled network that blocks port 3389) you can access your home computer using MS Remote Desktop.

*This tutorial assumes you have or know how to setup and dynamic DNS client if you need one
*Assumes you know how to setup port forwarding if you need to.
Because Remote Desktop is using port 3389 by default, it is not possible to go through a firewall. So you can use port 443. Because this port is always open on your companies firewall to allow https. (One would assume )

Unlocking WinXP's setupp.ini
============================


WinXP's setupp.ini controls how the CD acts. IE is it an OEM version or retail? First, find your setupp.ini file in the i386 directory on your WinXP CD. Open it up, it'll look something like this:

The Pid value is what we're interested in. What's there now looks like a standard default. There are special numbers that determine if it's a retail, oem, or volume license edition. First, we break down that number into two parts. The first five digits determines how the CD will behave, ie is it a retail cd that lets you clean install or upgrade, or an oem cd that only lets you perform a clean install? The last three digits determines what CD key it will accept. You are able to mix and match these values. For example you could make a WinXP cd that acted like a retail cd, yet accepted OEM keys.

Then on second partition or the same partition XP without pagefile.sys.

Then i get a dual boot. So after booting into XP, Install all ur fav progies
n games. Test each of them, to make sure they work... etc etc... all

make sure u unhide all files relates to win xp dir and progra files.

Then boot into 98 > goto backup utility of 98.

How to Bypass BIOS Passwords

BIOS passwords can add an extra layer of security for desktop and laptop computers. They are used to either prevent a user from changing the BIOS settings or to prevent the PC from booting without a password. Unfortunately, BIOS passwords can also be a liability if a user forgets their password, or changes the password to intentionally lock out the corporate IT department. Win XP Tip, Rename Multiple Files

A new, small, neat feature for winXP deals with renaming files. I personally have always wanted the OS to include a way to do a mass file renaming on a bunch of files. You can now rename multiple files at once in WinXP. Its real simple:

1. Select several files in Explorer, press F2 and rename one of those files to something else. All the selected files get renamed to the new file name (plus a number added to the end).

Under this key there is a setting called EnablePrefetcher, the default setting of which is 3. Increasing this number to 5 gives the prefetcher system more system resources to prefetch application data for faster load times. Depending on the number of boot processes you run on your computer, you may get benefits from settings up to 9. However, I do not have any substantive research data on settings above 5 so I cannot verify the benefits of a higher setting. This setting also may effect the loading times of your most frequently launched applications. This setting will not take effect until after you reboot your system.

Under this key there is a setting called NtfsMftZoneReservation, the default setting of which is 1. The range of this value is from 1 to 4. The default setting reserves one-eighth of the volume for the MFT. A setting of 2 reserves one-quarter of the volume for the MFT. A setting of 3 for NtfsMftZoneReservation reserves three-eighths of the volume for the MFT and setting it to 4 reserves half of the volume for the MFT. Most users will never exceed one-quarter of the volume. I recommend a setting of 2 for most users. This allows for a "moderate number of files" commensurate with the number of small files included in most computer games and applications. Reboot after applying this tweak.

Bit Torrent Tutorials

The first things you need to know about using Bit Torrent:
-- Bit Torrent is aimed at broadband users (or any connection better than dialup).
-- Sharing is highly appreciated, and sharing is what keeps bit torrent alive.
-- A bit torrent file (*.torrent) contains information about the piece structure of the download (more on this later)
-- The method of downloading is not your conventional type of download. Since downloads do not come in as one
big chunk, you are able to download from many people at once, increasing your download speeds. There may be
100 "pieces" to a file, or 20,000+ pieces, all depending on what you're downloading. Pieces are usually small (under 200kb)
-- The speeds are based upon people sharing as they download, and seeders. Seeders are people who constantly
share in order to keep torrents alive. Usually seeders are on fast connections (10mb or higher).

In this tutorial, I will be describing it all using a bit torrent client called Azureus. This client is used to decode the .torrent files into a useable format to download from other peers. From here on out, I will refer to Bit Torrent as BT.

Indonesia's president is cutting short a trip to Vietnam to visit the islands and oversee the relief operation.

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said he would fly back from a meeting with regional leaders to help deal with the tsunami aftermath.

He will also be briefed on the rescue effort on Java, where an erupting volcano has caused chaos.

He may be gone, but he's not forgotten. In fact, Michael Jackson has brought in so much bank since his June 2009 passing that he's landed the No. 1 spot on Forbes's Top-Earning Dead Celebrities List.
According to Forbes, Jackson's estate has brought in a whopping $275 million over the past 12 months – more than the combined earnings of superstars Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Jay-Z and Madonna, and more than any living artist or group, for that matter.
 
"[Jackson's] kids are going to have grandkids before that money's gone," estate lawyer Donald David, who handled Tupac Shakur's finances, tells the magazine.

The beloved singer's good fortune is due in large part to licensing deals cut by executors of his estate, a surge in sales of his music catalog and the $250 million box office of his film, "This Is It."
"There is a strong demand for Michael Jackson's music and merchandise, and that will only increase as more material surfaces in the years following his death," says Adam Kluger of product-placement outfit the Kluger Agency.

Adds Susan Blond, Jackson's publicist during his "Thriller" days, "His earning potential will only increase year after year, as his legacy continues to be cemented. When our great-grandchildren are talking about music, it will be Michael Jackson over Elvis Presley."

Make your PC faster!

1. First, run a scandisk or checkdisk. Let Windows fix any errors.

2. Run a disk cleanup utility...this will flush your temporary internet folder, trash can, temp system files, etc.

3. Delete any garbage files or data...if possible, run a Duplicate File Finder program.

4. Run Defrag on all partitions (NOTE: run this after you have deleted all trash and excess files!)

5. Run a registry cleaner utility and delete or get rid of any orphaned entries in that registry.

6. Check your exisiting swap file for it's size and location (*will explain location later in the post). If you have alot of ram (i.e. 1 gig and over) set this swap file to something small, like 250 mb. The reason is that this will force Windows to load more into memory, resulting in faster performance (note: some games and applications actually require a certain sized swap file so check your applications performance after making a size adjustment for any error messages.)
